Program Overview

The University of Sheffield is a research university located in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. It is rated 13th in the UK, 40th in Europe and 112th in the world in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Sheffield is England's fourth-largest city, with the wealth of facilities you would expect to find in a major city - yet it's compact, friendly and accessible. Located in South Yorkshire, in the north of England. It is close to Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham and the Peak District.  Sheffield has excellent rail links to all major cities. You can be in Leeds or Manchester by train in about an hour, and London in under 2.5 hours.

It is the greenest city in England, with 150 woodlands and 50 public parks. Crime statistics show it is also one of the UK's safest cities.

The University of Sheffield program is open to all Drexel undergraduate students. LeBow College of Business students will find that their ability to enroll in business courses at Sheffield will be limited thus they should plan to take non-business courses if they go abroad on this program.

For more information, please visit the University of Sheffield exchange student website.

Program Calendar

The University of Sheffield operates on a semester system. See here for the academic calendar.

Program Start Mid September
Program End Mid December

Coursework ends before Christmas but exams take place in January and the beginning of February.  Students will need to work with their Sheffield departments to see if they can either take their exams early or have the Drexel Study Abroad Office proctor their Sheffield exams in January. Read the December Finish Factsheet carefully. It is your responsibility to ensure that you can take exams early or at Drexel, and to make the appropriate arrangements with both universities.

Spring Semester Dates and Itinerary
Program Start Mid February
Program End Mid June

Drexel students will need to leave their fall/winter co-op early in order to be gone during Drexel's spring term. Students will return to Drexel in time for summer term.

Housing

Housing is guaranteed for all students. More information about Sheffield student housing can be found on the Sheffield Accommodation website.

Visa

U.S. Citizens do not need a visa to go to the United Kingdom. Non-U.S. citizens can verify if a visa is needed on the British Consulate Visa page.

Cost and Financial Aid

Program Costs
This is a Drexel sponsored program, thus all of your Drexel tuition and financial aid remain the same during your term abroad. For program costs, please consult the budget sheet.

Scholarships
If you receive Federal Work Study, consider applying for the Study Abroad Online Journalist work study position. The application is available to students after acceptance into the program.

To seek additional funding, review the Scholarship & Funding Opportunities. Remember that scholarship deadlines may be much earlier than study abroad deadlines, so plan accordingly. Students may also want to submit a revised budget to the Financial Aid Office to see if additional funding may be available.

  • The University of Sheffield Study Abroad Scholarship for American students is made possible by the generosity of Sheffield American alumni.  Each year there are several scholarships granted - one £1000 scholarship for a student studying at Sheffield for a full year and four £500 scholarships for students studying Fall and Spring semesters.  Any American national accepting a place at the University of Sheffield is eligible to apply.
