Drexel in Ireland: National University of Ireland, Galway

world map

Program Overview

NUI Galway is located in the heart of Galway, one of Europe's most vibrant towns located on the western coast of Ireland. Students will enjoy the best of both worlds - the rich social and cultural life of a cosmopolitan, friendly city, but also one of Europe's most beautiful and unspoilt landscapes, attracting tourists from all over the world. The school has over 17,000 students, which gives a youthful and active feeling to the town.

Established in 1845, the National University of Ireland, Galway has a distinguished reputation for teaching and research and is one of Ireland's most popular universities.

While in Galway, Drexel students will be taking courses with Irish students as well as other international students. Every year NUI Galway welcomes over 1500 international students from more than 95 countries to study. Representing 10% of the total student population, the international community makes a valuable contribution to University life, ensuring a culturally rich learning experience for all students.

Galway is 135 miles from Dublin and 55 miles from Shannon, cities which both have international airports. Galway also has a very small airport from where you can fly within Ireland and to major cities within the UK (London, Edinburgh, etc.) There are also a train (2 hours one way) and bus services (2 hours one way) between Galway and Dublin.

Eligibility

  • 3.0 minimum GPA
  • Priority for this program is given to Film and Video majors.

Academics

Course Availability
Use the Visiting Student Handbook to search coursework offered at NUI Galway. Courses are called "modules", and "course" means "major" in Ireland.

Course Equivalencies
This spreadsheet is a historical list of pre-approved courses Drexel students have taken at NUI Galway before. Students can choose to take courses from this list, but there is no guarantee that these courses will be offered in the future.

Students will need to get courses approved by the appropriate department for each course they plan to take at NUI Galway. If the course is not on the course equivalency spreadsheet (linked above).  For example, if you want to take a sociology course at NUI Galway for Drexel credit, its equivalent must be pre-approved by the Sociology Department at Drexel.

Grading
Students are taught and graded by Irish faculty at NUI Galway. Grades are noted as "CR/NCR" on their transcript and will NOT affect their GPA. In order to receive CR, students must earn a "C" or above at the host institution. Students must be a full-time student at the host institution while also taking the equivalent of a full-time load at Drexel. A full course load at Galway is 30 ECTS credits per semester. Depending on the courses, students can expect to take 5 - 7 courses per semester

Program Calendar
