Drexel in Denmark: Denmark Technical University (DTU)

world map

Program Overview

DTU is ranked as one of the foremost technical universities in Europe, continues to set new records in the number of publications, and persistently increase and develop our partnerships with industry, and assignments accomplished by DTU’s public sector consultancy. The campus is safe and secure and a site of great natural beauty: wooded areas, squares, inner courtyards and gardens, sports fields and a central avenue are nestled in the gaps between the buildings and combine to create an aesthetically pleasing architectural statement.

DTU’s main campus is located north of Copenhagen near the town of Lyngby. More than 100 buildings are scattered across the 106-hectare great plain, which is divided into four quadrants – exactly like points in a coordinate system. This is a fantastic opportunity to make new friends and explore your academic interests from a different perspective. For more information please visit DTU's International Student Website.

Academics

Course Availability

DTU Course Catalog: Use this to search for coursework. DTU offers a variety of courses in English. Majors offered at DTU include: Biotechnology, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering and Physics. Most courses in English are taught at the Master's level.

Course Equivalencies
Course Equivalents: This spreadsheet is a historical list of pre-approved courses Drexel students have taken there before.  Students can choose to take courses from this list, but there is no guarantee that these courses will be offered in the future.

Course Approvals
If you would like to take courses from the catalog that are not listed on the above course equivalents spreadsheet, you will need to have equivalents approved by the appropriate department. For example, if you want to take a Computer Science course for Drexel credit, the Computer Science Department at Drexel must pre- approve the course and equivalency.

Grading
Students are taught and graded by Danish faculty at DTU. Grades are noted as "CR/NCR" on their transcript and will NOT affect their GPA. In order to receive CR, students must earn a "C" or above at the host institution. Students must be a full-time student at the host institution while also taking the equivalent of a full-time load at Drexel.

Students may also choose to study Danish language at the nearby language school, Hellerup Sprogskole, for an additional fee. Interested students may sign up for these languages courses directly with DTU at the start of the semester.

Program Calendar

DTU is a semester based school. Click here for the DTU academic calendar. The program is available to Drexel students during DTU's Fall semester.

Fall Semester Dates and Itinerary
Program Start Date Early September
Program End Date Mid December

Students with summer term classes should be prepared to request early finals so they can leave for Denmark in late August/ early September. Students on spring/summer co-op will need to arrange to leave their co-op early.

Due to the potential need to adjust academic and co-op cycles, students are urged to begin planning 12 months prior to their intended study abroad term.

Housing

Students have the option of staying in on-campus single room residences.

Visa

All students are required to obtain a visa prior to entry into Denmark. Please consult the Danish Embassy’s website for more information.

Cost and Financial Aid

Program Costs
This is a Drexel sponsored program, thus all of your Drexel tuition and financial aid remain the same during your term abroad. For program costs, please consult the budget sheet.

Financial Aid
Financial aid applies for this program.  Students who receive Federal Work Study should consider applying for the Study Abroad Online Journalist work study position (after acceptance).

Scholarships
To seek additional funding, review the Scholarship & Funding Opportunities. Remember that scholarship deadlines may be much earlier than study abroad deadlines, so plan accordingly. Students may also want to submit a revised budget to the Financial Aid Office to see if additional funding may be available.
