Program Overview

Bristol University is a large, research institution located in Bristol, England. Since its formation in 1876, it has become a leader in UK and is recognized globally for its academic excellence and research. Bristol is ranked 9th in the UK, 19th in Europe, and 37th in the world according to the QS World Rankings.
 
The Bristol University study abroad program is open to all Drexel undergraduate students.
 
Study abroad students at Bristol are fully integrated into the university and study alongside British and other international students.

Bristol is the United Kingdom's eighth most populous city with about 400,000 people, and the most populous city in Southern England after London. Bristol is renowned for its current and historical art scene, including events and festivals which are on offer all year round catering for an eclectic mix of interests.
 
Bristol is located in southwest England, about 1.5 hours away from London, and 30 minutes from Cardiff, the capital of Wales. With excellent shopping, a vibrant social scene, and glorious scenery, Bristol has been ranked the #1 place to live in Britain according to the Sunday Times, a British newspaper. Eligibility

  • 3.0 minimum GPA
  • Sophomore status or higher

Academics

Use the Unit Catalog to search coursework offered at Bristol University. NOTE: business classes are in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law.


Course Equivalencies
Students will need to get courses approved by the appropriate department for each course they plan to take at Bristol.  For example, to take a sociology course at Bristol for Drexel credit, its equivalent must be pre-approved by the Sociology Department at Drexel.

Grading
Students are taught and graded by UK faculty at Bristol. Grades are noted as "CR/NCR" on their transcript and will NOT affect their GPA. In order to receive CR, students must earn a "C" or above at the host institution. Students must be a full-time student at the host institution while also taking the equivalent of a full-time load at Drexel.

Fall Semester Dates and Itinerary

Coursework ends before Christmas but exams take place in January.  Students will need to work with Bristol to see if they can either take their exams early or have the Drexel Study Abroad Office proctor their Bristol exams in January. It is your responsibility to ensure that you can take exams early or at Drexel, and to make the appropriate arrangements with both universities.

Spring Semester Dates and Itinerary

Drexel students will need to leave their fall/winter co-op early in order to be at Bristol in time for spring semester.  Students will return to Drexel in time for summer term. 

Housing

University accommodation is guaranteed for all Study Abroad students coming to Bristol for the fall term.  Accommodation for spring term students is not guaranteed, but Bristol will assist to place you and will help you find private accommodation should there not be space in university accommodation.

Visa

U.S. Citizens do not need a visa to go to the United Kingdom. Non-U.S. citizens can verify if a visa is needed on the British Consulate Visa page.

Cost and Financial Aid

Program Costs
This is a Drexel sponsored program, thus all of Drexel tuition and financial aid remain the same during the term abroad. For program costs, please consult the budget sheet.

Financial Aid
Financial aid applies for this program.  Students who receive Federal Work Study should consider applying for the Study Abroad Online Journalist work study position (after acceptance).

Scholarships
To seek additional funding, review the Scholarship & Funding Opportunities. Remember that scholarship deadlines may be much earlier than study abroad deadlines, so plan accordingly. Students may also want to submit a revised budget to the Financial Aid Office to see if additional funding may be available.

  • BUTEX scholarship for students studying abroad in the UK at affiliated institutions.
  • Students who receive Federal Pell Grant should apply for the Gilman Scholarship. Awards up to $3,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students that receive the Federal Pell Grant.
